GIBEH Uganda with support PLAS Japan has implemented the RISE project for the past two years. The livelihood of different communities has been improved through poultry raring and we have witnessed children who could not even purchase scholastic materials now able to buy books, pens, uniforms, shoes among other things and even most of the children uplifted through counselling sessions that have been spread out through 7 powerful modules.

We have been able to touch 40 beneficiaries through 20 households.

We had sessions on positive communication skills between parents and their children. We focused more in helping the parents understand good and bad communication and its role in fostering parent- child relationships and also helping them understand the effects of bad communication. To some, we did role plays with the parents including scenarios where a child fails to follow their parent’s instructions and how the parent would feel in terms of communication. Some of the parents shared their opinions on how children should be raised and how to communicate to them, in a way that won’t traumatize them.

We also had sessions on career planning with emphasis on the development of their career skills as children that long to create change in their communities. This was aimed at helping them understand the range of life roles and to further help them build self-confidence, increase their esteem and responsibility.

The counsellors encouraged them to be aware of themselves as well as their situations so as to be able to develop decision-making skills that could inform their future. This was through a drawing exercise.

Here they shared their life planning and how they expect it to be in the future in accordance to their ages. They managed to color the rainbow chart and were able to understand what should be done to achieve they roles they had planned it.
