Gibeh and Plas Japan Conducts SRHR Assessment and Beneficiary Selection

On March 25th, Gibeh, in collaboration with Plas Japan, conducted a crucial assessment and beneficiary selection for the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project across several schools in the Mpunge and Mpatta areas. The initiative aimed to identify and select students who will benefit from upcoming SRHR training programs.

The assessment team visited Mpunge Primary and Secondary Schools, Bulere Primary School, Kamda Secondary School, and Butere Primary School.

Beneficiary Selection Details:

Mpunge Primary School:

  • Ziwa Ronald
  • Kalsa Joel
  • Nakiwala Sumin
  • Adyambo Esther

Mpunge Secondary School:

  • Lwamusayi Pius (S3)
  • Nansimbi Mary (S1)
  • Nanfuna Shamulah (S3)
  • Muyanja Jonathan

St. Andrews Bulere Primary School:

  • Zambayo Blessing (P4)
  • Nagawa Afuwa (P5)
  • Kakoza Bruno (P6)
  • Makoha Peter (P5)

Note: Due to a sports competition, the assessment team was only able to conduct the selection for one student at Bulere Primary School, as the majority of students were away.

Challenges and Adaptations:

The team encountered a scheduling challenge at Kamda Secondary School, where students were in the midst of examinations. The school administration requested that the assessment be postponed until the following Wednesday to avoid disrupting the students’ academic activities.

Butere Primary School: A Community in Need

At Butere Primary School, the Gibeh team introduced the project and initiated the selection process for peer educators who will receive SRHR training. The Headmistress warmly welcomed the initiative, highlighting the pressing need within her community. She shared that the school’s proximity to a landing site results in approximately 3-4 Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases annually, with a recent case reported this year.

The Headmistress expressed concern about the prevalent awareness of sexual activity among young girls, citing concerning incidents such as two students fighting over a male teacher they claimed as their boyfriend, and a Valentine’s Day gift of a rose flower from a student to a male teacher. She attributed these issues to the impact of broken marriages and challenging home environments. To enhance the effectiveness of future sensitization talks, she suggested involving medical professionals.

This collaborative effort between Gibeh and Plas Japan underscores a commitment to empowering young people with vital information and resources for their sexual and reproductive health.
